The Houston Chronicle is the largest daily newspaper in Texas and one of the state's largest news organizations. It has been owned by Hearst Corporation since 1987. The newspaper operates a Washington, D.C. news bureau that provides coverage of issues of special interest to residents of Houston and Texas.The first edition of the Chronicle was published on October 14, 1901, funded by money from the famous Texas oil gusher Spindletop. It sold for two cents per copy, at a time when most papers sold for five cents each.
