A cloud of Saharan dust moving northeast over the Gulf of Mexico is expected to hit the Houston area by Friday, with experts warning that the cloud may reduce air quality across the region for several days. The dust cloud comes as Texas continues cooking amid the second heat wave of the summer, driving heat index values as high as 117 degrees in and around Houston. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) reported Wednesday that the cloud should reach South Texas and the southern coastal bend by Thursday afternoon or evening, "with the plume spreading inland and light patches possibly reaching parts of Southeast Texas, South Central Texas, as well as the lower Rio Grande Valley overnight.
