Harlon Brooks, the patriarch of a once-thriving barbecue business built on the original Harlon's BBQ in the city's south side, died on Sunday. He was 79. The cause of death was prostate cancer. Brooks and his wife Alfreddie Brooks founded Harlon's BBQ in 1977, set in a former gas station at the corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Selinsky Road in the South Park neighborhood. That original store, which the couple opened with their friends Harland and Margaret West, spawned multiple locations.
