This week, Sam Houston (the football program, not the Texas statesman who died in 1863.) 1. Sam Houston has competed as an independent (1912-23), in the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1932-1981), NCAA Division II (1982-1985), in the Southland Conference of NCAA Division I FCS (1986-2021) and with the Western Athletic Conference in 2022, joining Conference USA as an FBS school beginning in 2023.
